This diet is actually a well recommended dietary plan many health organizations aimed at providing resource for a good heart, weight management and disease control. The high protein-low carb diet encourages you to use protein to get the 30 percent to 50 percent of your calories. This is because protein is a very important nutrient that builds, maintain and repair your body tissues. This means that this diet is healthy and good for you. Foods rich in protein are yogurt, soy milk, eggs, peanut butter, lean meat, grains, bread, nuts, pasta, seeds, fish, poultry, cheese, beans, lentils, legumes and tofu. Great sources of food that offers high protein and no carbs are beef, turkey, salmon, tuna, venison, lamb and chicken (breast). Cooked lean beef, fish or poultry can provide 7 grams of protein per ounce. However, take note that high protein must be 9 grams minimum per serving. If you cook 4 ounce of salmon or beef, you get around 30 grams of protein and zero carbohydrate. This is an ideal amount of meat for high protein low carb diet.
Soy products like soy milk are a good source of protein too. 1 ounce of protein powder made from pure soy can give around 25 grams of protein and zero carb. Although tofu is also considered as a soy product rich in carbohydrates, soft tofu can only provide 5 grams of protein per serving which does not meet the minimum 9 grams. However, consuming one half cup of this can yield protein up to 16 grams so it is still a food for this diet. This however will yield 4 grams of carbohydrates which is alright as low carbs means less than 55 grams.
Eggs, milk, ice cream and yogurt are just a few examples of dairy products that are high in protein. However, these products can also offer an amount of carbohydrate. That is why consuming such while under high protein low carbs diet must be measure very carefully. Cheese is the only dairy product that you don’t have to worry about as cheese will serve no or little carbohydrates. An egg provides 7 grams of protein. Most of the protein coming from egg are from egg white that is why an ounce of and egg white powder can provide 23 grams of protein with just 2 grams of carbohydrates.
High protein low carbs diet is known to be effective. One good example of such diet is the pilot’s diet. As this basically consist of your daily food, it will not be hard to start a high protein diet and minding the carbohydrate intake. So your neighbor, office mate, best friend, whoever just lost 10 pounds in only two weeks following the latest in high protein low carbohydrate diets. And now you’re thinking you should give it a go — have even started the search for high protein low carbohydrate recipes?
True, high protein low carb diets seem to be leading many people to weight loss success. Trouble is, they seemed to do it 30 years ago, too. They were the rage in the early 70s, and look where many of us are today: growing fatter with each decade.
The bottom line: Diets — low carb diets or not — simply don’t work for the vast majority of people.
If that doesn’t convince you, look at some of the reasons why high protein low carbohydrate diets seem to create weight loss success stories — but really don’t.
“I’m not hungry when I eat high protein low carb diets.”
Many people say they feel more satisfied eating low carbohydrate diets. And indeed, studies show protein is the most satiating nutrient. Proteins and fat (which is usually in high protein low carbohydrate foods) cause your body to release cholecystokinin, a hormone that contributes to the feeling of fullness. Some protein in meals and even snacks may help us feel more satisfied and go longer between eating. But the key word is “some.” We don’t need an excess of protein, or low carb diets, to get these effects. By just eating balanced meals that contain grain/starchy foods, protein foods, vegetables and/or fruits and some fat, most people can achieve the same satiety. One other important note is that hunger control with low carbohydrate diets is often the result of ketosis (when your body burns fat for fuel.) Ketosis is very unhealthy, causing nausea, headaches, fatigue, even coma.
“Results are results – I saw successful weight loss, didn’t I?”
Many people do lose weight on high protein low carb diets. Instead of fat, however, they’re initially losing more water than anything else — and it quickly returns once off low carb diets. They seem to see successful weight loss, too, because low carb diets restrict many foods, resulting in eating less than usual.
The big question is: Is it really successful weight loss if it doesn’t stay off? For most people, if weight loss is achieved quickly and with a restrictive method such as a diet that does not allow for individual likes and dislikes, then the lost pounds will return, along with discouragement, defeat and even more pounds than before. What’s more, high protein low carb diets may also increase risk for health problems such as osteoporosis, cancer, even heart disease. A healthy intake of whole grain foods, fruits and vegetables — often on the “avoid” list in high protein low carb diets – appears to help reduce this risk, and is the mainstay of a sensible plan to achieve weight loss success.

Atkins diet was unknown 35 years ago. Though it seems that ancient people – athletes particularly – followed a strict diet which is likewise Atkins basic.
Strict diet and severe exercises for Ancient Greeks
Long before dr Atkins finished his theory about ketosis and established his famous diet, ancient people had undertaken it, without any clue at all. Not only they were eating Atkins-style, but also they were strongly practicing regular exercise, as dr Atkins now recommends. Ancient Greeks spent a lot of time educating their bodies. Gymnastic exercises were very appreciated, children were trained and directed to follow a daily training program. After years of strict diet and heavy gymnastics, Greeks finally admitted that “too much and too strict” is not good for health, because this regimen exhausted the human constitution.
Greek Olympians followed meat-only diet
In fact, we talk about Greek people who ate fruits, vegetables, a lot of fish, breads. This was a regular eating regimen for ordinary Greeks, with the amendment that fish was the most common meat eaten in that seafaring region. Quite interesting is the fact that Greek olympians had a bit different eating regimen, a meat-heavy regimen, like the low-carb Atkins’s (not so refined, of course, no phases at all). The goal was to develop a lot of muscles and meat was enormously necessary. But not any Greek could daily afford meat on the table. Only upper social strata from Greece could afford it. The olympians also ate more rich-protein legumes which their bodies needed to keep a boost of energy.
Moreover, according to food historian Francine Segan, an ancient Olympic runner was put to undertake a meat-only diet. It seems that this tough exclusive diet was a must to win a competition. That works for runners. The fact that runners ate only meat started a sort of meat diet craze, pointed out the historian. Another condition to complete athletes’ diet was to expel bread right before competition, eating dried figs instead. Francine Segan admitted that he discovered that while he was searching information about famous Mediteranean cuisine.
Their diet was directed according to Pausanias. Those practicing heavy exercise ate pork and a particular kind of bread. Also, it seems that beef was later introduced in the ordinary diet of the athletes. Goat meat is mentioned, too, in “A Dictionary of Greek and Roman Antiquities”. Meat consumption was highly encouraged, as on the Atkins diet plan. Fats, too, since pork, is a fat meat.
Ancient preoccupation with health, diet and exercise is praiseworthy. A low-carbohydrate daily regimen, along with regular exercise are a simple and efficient scheme for losing weight and shaping the body. The ancient people knew it by trying it only. No theories, no calories, no ketosis, no debates around. Maybe they didn’t need to know how it works. “Mens sana in corpore sana” worked best for them. read more
